Common Children’s Dental Concerns

Why choose us

Whether you live in the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota or western Wisconsin, our doctor-owned Park Dental practices provide the dental care your child deserves.

Some common dental concerns for children that we see at Park Dental include:

Dental emergencies

Accidents happen, and knowing what to do in the case of a dental emergency could save one of your child’s permanent teeth. Emergencies can happen anywhere at any time. For any emergency, it is important to take your child to the dentist or the emergency room as soon as you can, based on their immediate needs.

Other ways to help during a dental emergency vary based upon the injury and can include:

• Broken Jaw
Place a cold compress on your child’s injury for pain and swelling. Go to an emergency department as soon as possible.
• Cracked Tooth
Use a cold compress on your child’s face to help with pain and swelling. Wash their mouth with warm water.
• Toothache
A toothache can have many causes. Use floss to remove anything in between your child’s teeth and rinse their mouth with warm water. Give your child over-the-counter medication like acetaminophen rather than placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gums. If the pain doesn’t go away, make an appointment with your child’s dentist.
• Tooth Knocked Out
Find the lost tooth and keep it milk if it is a permanent tooth. For a baby tooth, you don’t need to keep it moist, but find it and bring it to your child’s dentist if you are able. Pick up the tooth by the crown instead of the root.

To prevent injuries to the teeth during sports activities, have your child wear a mouthguard.

You can also ask your child’s dentist about dental sealants. Dental sealants are a protective covering that typically seal up the deep grooves in the back teeth. Dental sealants can reduce the risk of tooth decay in molars by 80%, according to the American Dental Association.

Losing Baby Teeth

Baby teeth generally start falling out around the age of 6. Baby teeth are generally fully replaced by permanent teeth by the time your child turns 13.

When your child’s tooth starts to become loose, they may wish to pull it out. To do so, grasp the tooth with tissue and twist it quickly to remove. Your child’s dentist can also perform a dental extraction, if necessary.

To prevent cavities in your child’s new permanent teeth, make sure they are brushing and flossing twice per day and going to the dentist twice per year, or as often as your child’s dentist recommends.

Thumb-Sucking

Thumb-sucking is completely normal in children. It is a natural reflex that can help soothe your child and help them feel safe. Many children stop sucking their thumbs on their own around the ages of 2 to 4 or when their permanent teeth start coming in.

If your child continues to suck their thumb after their permanent teeth come in, it can lead to changes in their teeth or mouth. Make an appointment with your child’s dentist to learn ways to prevent thumb-sucking if it becomes an issue with your child.
